Unless you’re Ice T, staying cool is hard when it comes to clothing. For eons, we’ve engineered our garments to keep us warm. Most fabrics, whether cotton, fur, or feathers, trap a layer of air next to our body to keep us warm. They also reflect infrared radiation, more commonly known as heat, back toward us.
Now, there’s a new fashion. Scientists have devised a fabric to keep wearers cooler than anything except going without any fabric at all. The new material, made from a common plastic called polyethylene, is a thin ply riddled with nano-sized holes that allow the release of infrared radiation, water vapor (that is, sweat), and air.
At the same time, the bright white fabric strongly reflects visible light, preventing it from warming the person wearing it. Want a closer look? Check out the video above for the skinny on the coolest fabric around.
