Slates Jewelry, well-known in the area for top craftsmanship and outstanding customer service, recently moved their business to a beautiful, standalone cottage located at 107 Old Montgomeryville Road.

“We were in the Farmer’s Furniture shopping center location for just over two years and we moved here last October and absolutely love it,” said Kristine Slates, who co-owns the store with husband Philip. “It provides a real sense of privacy and better parking for our customers.”

The shop is more than quaint with large photographs of Hollywood legends such as Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner flanking the walls. The décor is modern rustic, which creates a stylish backdrop to the exquisite jewelry on display.

In addition to fine jewelry, the Slates offer a wide range of unique costume pieces — rings designed with richly-colored stones inset in metal and necklaces of all lengths with distinct patterns that would add glamour to any woman’s outfit.

“We try to carry jewelry that no one else does in Milledgeville including one-of-a-kind pieces that are made by local Georgia artists,” said Kristine. “We also offer ring and jewelry dishes made by a local pottery artist.”

Philip has more than 30 years’ experience working with jewelry and can customize most any piece that is given to him. He began his career at the famed jewelry store Bashinski in Macon alongside his brother who continues working there as a master jeweler.

He enjoys the creative process of taking the wishes of a client and creating something that will be a treasured part of their lives. Philip can create original work from scrap gold, loose stones or improve upon an heirloom passed down through generations.

“Some clients trust me to create an original piece for them while others know exactly what they want me to create,” said Philip. “I can take a family heirloom and create something modern that still embodies all of the sentimentalities of the original piece.”

For the bride-to-be, Slates offers nearly endless possibilities for choosing the perfect diamond and setting. They never rush a customer — bride or groom — in making such an intricate decision as picking an engagement ring or wedding bands.

“Our focus is making the customer happy with whatever piece they choose. We enjoy working with customers throughout the process and being a part of such an important life event,” said Kristine.

Slates participates in the memo program with diamond brokers, ensuring that each customer has a wide range of choices of stones available.

“Because we work with brokers through the memo program, we do not carry a large inventory inside the store but can get a range of diamonds — including larger than average stones — to choose from within a day — this actually increases our inventory possibilities greatly,” said Philip.

The store is home to Milledgeville’s only laser welding machine which, according to Philip, is far more precise than traditional methods and does not compromise softer metals with torches and soldering.

In addition to selling fine, costume jewelry and custom creations, Slates offer several other services including jewelry repair, watch battery replacement, sizing, polishing, re-stringing and appraisals.

Leigh Kendrick from Sandersville needed her new watch to be sized and decided to give Slates a try.

“I was told about them from someone I spoke with in another store in town. I looked them up and they had several great reviews online, so I decided to drop by and have them re-size my watch,” said Kendrick.

Philip stresses that many repairs and re-sizing can occur on the same day the customer comes into the store and especially, like Kendrick, if they have traveled from out of town.

With Valentines’ Day fast approaching, Kristine will prepare convenient gift bags full of chocolate and a unique piece of jewelry — making the decision of gift-giving just a bit easier for the giver.

“We do everything with our clients’ happiness in mind — that is our No. 1 goal for our business,” said Kristine.
